School of Business
With a long history as one the premier business school in the Northeast, the School of Business at the University of Connecticut is gaining national prominence for excellence in research and education. Ranked twenth-seventh in the U.S. by Forbes, the school is poised to become one of the best in the world. Modern facilities—ranked the tenth best by Princeton Review in 2007—offer superb research and learning environments. The school boasts nationally recognized interdisciplinary centers in real estate, international business and entrepreneurship as well as one of the most comprehensive academic programs in the country. Our University. Our Moment. The Campaign for UConn will support the school’s strategic plan to build on our greatest strengths and develop new programs to respond to the changing needs of the global marketplace.
A Plan for the Future
The strategic plan complements the University’s overarching academic plan, which prioritizes globalization, diversity, social justice, entrepreneurship and workforce development. Our long-term goals are to solidify a national reputation as a top-flight research school and become a top public business school in overall quality.
The school is committed to making significant advances in financial and risk management; entrepreneurship and innovation; and global management. To that end, we are investing in the accounting, finance, marketing, management and operations information management departments. And we are amplifying recruiting efforts for undergraduate and graduate students and increasing support for students and faculty members.
Building on successful existing programs, we endeavor to expand enrichment opportunities and create an integrated business education that will produce global renaissance leaders.
Undergraduate and graduate education is enhanced through a range of distinctive experiential programs, called learning accelerators, like edgelab at UConn–Stamford and the Student Managed Fund. The former is a strategic alliance between the school and General Electric where students develop practical solutions to real-world problems while collaborating with GE executives and UConn faculty; through the latter, students select stocks and manage the portfolio of a $2-million endowment from the UConn Foundation.
Among the school’s new initiatives is the Sustainable Community Outreach and Public Engagement (SCOPE) Accelerator, which will address business problems in social entrepreneurship and innovation for organizations such as the Special Olympics.
The faculty is the backbone of the academic, research and outreach enterprises. Increasing the number of endowed chairs, professorships and fellowships is vital to achieving our goal to be ranked among the best schools in the country. Endowed positions enable the school to recruit and retain distinguished scholars with the leadership experience and national prominence to raise the level of excellence.
Students
As Connecticut’s flagship public university, UConn is committed to providing stellar education and training to the state’s brightest students while meeting the workforce needs of Connecticut businesses. Recruitment and outreach are among the school’s highest priorities. World-class academic programs, experiential opportunities and strong financial aid packages are critical to attract the state’s most promising undergraduate students. Recruiting the best graduate students requires top-flight faculty, cutting-edge facilities and competitive fellowship packages.
In collaboration with the business community, the school has built state-of-the-art centers that provide exceptional research and learning facilities with focus areas ranging from real estate to family business. The school’s centers and institutes support cutting-edge research by faculty and graduate students, leading to powerful business solutions for the global marketplace.
New partnerships and outreach efforts with international companies will raise the school’s profile as a research-based business program. We are investing in both personnel and infrastructure to position the school as a national leader. Our goals are to recruit nationally recognized administrators and researchers and improve equipment and technology.
