The UConn School of Medicine, part of the core of the state’s flagship academic medical center, is a place where an integrated curriculum offers students access to the latest technology and pedagogical approaches, provides the cross-disciplinary environment for innovative research to thrive, and powers the clinical setting that not only gives excellent care for our patients, but the perfect perspective for tomorrow’s doctors.

With areas of expertise as wide-ranging as stem cells and musculoskeletal care, to cancer and cardiology, the UConn School of Medicine is a true resource for the entire state.  Philanthropic support for such a unique school touches all areas of research, care and education, today and for generations into the future. With its focus on the UConn Health Center’s core missions, the School of Medicine plays a vital role in today’s care, and provides the education and research to enable a healthier tomorrow.

Education

The School of Medicine is a student-oriented culture, where students play a prominent role in shaping curriculum. With integrated problem-based learning that focuses on chronic care, ambulatory experiences, prevention, rehabilitation, problems of aging, and public health, the school integrates basic science and clinical concepts. It creates a new kind of physician not only skilled in diagnosis and treatment, but who can communicate with patients, and is informed and sensitive about medicine’s ethical issues.
These are the doctors whose training will enable them to both prosper in a field that has changed dramatically, as well as adapt and thrive in any future health care environment. Whether UConn’s graduates embark upon a career in clinical medicine, biomedical research, or teaching, they are ready for tomorrow’s medicine.

At the same time that we look globally, UConn’s role as the state’s flagship public university means that School of Medicine alumni often become the health care providers for our local communities. Philanthropic support for medical education pays tremendous dividends close to home.

Private support allows us to innovate and excel in ways that tuition and state support alone cannot sustain. In addition to scholarship support that makes medical school affordable and accessible, there are great philanthropic needs for equipment and technology that provides students a hands-on experience they can carry with them throughout their careers. In addition, study abroad and study away experiences, as well as student research funding, offer priceless experiential opportunities.

Research

The advancement of knowledge through research is key to an academic medical center. Students regularly participate in wide-ranging research activities, spanning the spectrum from basic research at the cellular and molecular level; to clinical research of new treatments; to translation of basic advances for clinical care; and  population-based and health outcomes research.

Faculty research at the School of Medicine is focused on 17 basic science departments and centers, and many more clinical and service centers and cores. From aging to vascular biology, UConn’s researchers are breaking new ground in the discoveries of tomorrow.  Philanthropic support is vitally needed to offer faculty the opportunity to pursue innovative research that otherwise would be untapped through conventional funding means.

Clinical Care

The crucial component to the School of Medicine that sets it apart is its integration into clinical services provided right at the UConn Health Center. With excellent clinical care offered through its centers and key signature programs, the UConn Health Center offers students and faculty of the School of Medicine a true “from lab bench to bedside” environment, where innovation and discovery thrive.
