For faculty members and students alike, passion for patient care fuels everything we do at the School of Nursing. Better educated nurses yield better patient outcomes. That’s why we are committed to providing exceptional education, research and outreach. We are equally committed to contributing solutions to the state and nation’s critical nursing shortage. Through Our University. Our Moment. The Campaign for UConn, we will raise $10 million to support our faculty, students and programs, and realize our vision for the School of Nursing’s future. Our goal is to advance to the top 15 percent of public nursing schools in the country.
Since 1942, the School of Nursing has earned prestige by producing a superb supply of nursing leaders. For many years, public funds supported student scholarships, high-quality facilities and attracted superior faculty members. However, over the past two decades, traditional funding sources have decreased dramatically.
Our strategic plan aims to return the school to preeminence through the creation of marquee education and research programs that support UConn’s academic plan. With private philanthropy, we can transform the school for current and future generations by supporting innovative research, scholarship, and clinical practice; endowed faculty chairs; and student scholarships.
Our faculty’s charge is two-pronged: to educate students to succeed in all areas of clinical nursing practice, and prepare scholars to effectively lead, discover and teach. To fulfill our responsibilities to future generations, the School of Nursing needs to attract the brightest and best faculty candidates. An acute shortage has created fierce competition for top teaching talent. Our highest priority is to establish the school’s first endowed chairs and professorships—emblems of institutional vigor—to recruit exceptional scholars to teach, research and translate discoveries into applications.
The worldwide nursing and educator shortages are destined to worsen. Moreover, as nursing and medical knowledge advance and health care changes, nurses’ responsibilities are expanding exponentially. Our moral obligation, to Connecticut and beyond, is to develop new programs to address the current crisis and prepare nurses for the workplaces of tomorrow. For example, in response to the leadership shortage, we became the first in Connecticut to offer a doctorate in nursing practice. Through the campaign, we will raise funds to develop new marquee programs and provide student scholarships.
Diversity is essential to graduating nurses who mirror their caseload populations and understand different cultures and languages. The School of Nursing is creating outreach programs at the middle and high school levels to generate interest in nursing careers and help young students apply and succeed at UConn. Endowed support will help us enhance programming and reach out to more students from underrepresented groups.
Nursing research and scholarship are rooted in a passion to improve patients’ quality of life. By nature, nurses are collaborators. The Center for Nursing Scholarship is a home for interdisciplinary and collaborative work. Private gifts help support scholarly inquiry and the development of pilot programs, which, in turn, attract federal research funding and raise the school’s national profile.
