2012-gala-kream.jpgPeter J. Deckers, M.D., Professor of Surgery and Dean Emeritus, UConn School of Medicine
Deckers has served more than two decades in leadership positions at the UConn Health Center. Since retiring as the executive vice president for health affairs at the UConn Health Center and dean of the UConn School of Medicine in August 2008, he has continued practicing medicine at the Health Center. He is currently a physician at the Carole and Ray Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center and holds the Murray-Heilig Chair in Surgery. Deckers and his wife, Barbara, established the Peter J. and Barbara A. Deckers Student Academic Enhancement Endowment Fund in 2000 to support programs at the School of Medicine, School of Dental Medicine and Graduate School.

Barbara E. Kream, Ph.D., Professor of Medicine and Associate Dean of the UConn Graduate School
Kream was appointed associate dean of the Graduate School at the University of Connecticut in 2011. In addition to directing the M.D./Ph.D. program at the UConn Health Center, she is a professor of medicine and genetics and developmental biology, and holds a joint appointment as a professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Kream has dedicated much of her career to education. She has taught medical, dental and graduate courses and been active with student training and mentoring across the Health Center. With a background in biochemistry and molecular endocrinology, her research is focused on the hormonal regulation of bone formation.

2012-gala-kream.jpgJohn W. Rowe, M.D., Professor, Health and Policy Management, Columbia University; retired Chairman and CEO of Aetna; former Chair of the UConn Board of Trustees
Rowe is the former chairman of the Board of Trustees of the University of Connecticut and a former member of the UConn Health Center’s Board of Directors (June 2002–August 2004). Rowe has held numerous prestigious positions in medical academia and industry. Following his tenure as professor of medicine and founding director of the Division on Aging at Harvard Medical School while concurrently serving as chief of gerontology at Beth Israel Hospital, he became a professor of geriatrics and medicine and president of Mount Sinai School of Medicine and Mount Sinai Hospital. In 1998, he became the chief executive officer of Mount Sinai New York University Medical Center and Health Systems, one of the nation’s largest academic health care organizations. He joined Aetna, Inc. as chief executive officer in 2000, and served as chairman and CEO from 2001 until his retirement in 2006. Currently, Rowe is a professor of medicine at Columbia University.
