Winning the Battle Against Cancer
When a routine mammogram revealed a lump, Susan Neistein sought a specialist who would see her right away.
“I wanted to address my situation immediately, so I called UConn,” says Neistein, a board-certified Advanced Practice Registered Nurse specializing in psychiatric care. “They understood my circumstance and gave me an appointment for the next day. From that moment on, I was overwhelmed by the patient care I received.”
After Neistein was diagnosed with breast cancer, she received complete care—from chemotherapy, surgery and radiation to nutritional counseling—at the UConn Health Center’s Carole and Ray Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center.
The cancer center is known for a multidisciplinary team approach and state-of-the-art technology. With a long-term goal to grow our resources and become a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, UConn has developed a number of initiatives that offer world-class diagnostic and treatment services to the people of Connecticut and the greater New England region. The Breast Health and Women’s Cancer Prevention and Treatment Program—established with private support—is among the innovative programs that are changing lives.
“UConn is the crowning glory of our state,” adds Neistein. “I can’t thank everyone enough for saving my life. Every receptionist, every doctor, every nurse was completely dedicated to making me comfortable and to helping me make informed decisions. I never felt alone.”
