Bringing Together Writers and Community
Litchfield County is home to UConn’s Torrington campus as well as a community of prolific professional writers and artists. The Litchfield County Writers Project (LCWP) takes advantage of this special local resource to enhance educational programs and provide a valuable outreach service.
“Litchfield County is our Bloomsbury, our Paris in the ’20s with its writers and artists,” says LCWP director Davyne Verstandig.
Local novelists, journalists, artists, playwrights, screenwriters and poets are invited to share their work at free public readings, performances and lectures. The program has attracted such luminaries as Frank McCourt, Barbara Taylor Bradford and Frank Delaney.
“My wife, Diane, and I came to hear one of the lectures, and we were hooked,” says Delaney, a New York Times best-selling author. “We both believe in giving back to our communities. We found a program that felt right to us in the Litchfield County Writers Project.”
Delaney supports the project’s missions to enhance academics at the University while bringing together Litchfield County residents in the pursuit of intellectual discourse and greater community involvement.
“The Litchfield Country Writers Project inspires students and connects the public to the University,” says Delaney. “UConn is making a huge contribution to the quality of life in our community.”
